I’ve been reading “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks I’ve been reading “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks (our book of the month for the Boss Responses Book Club). This book hits where it hurts. I keep seeing how easy it is to self-sabotage without even realizing it.
Hendricks talks about the “Upper Limit Problem”—the hidden barriers we create when things start going too well.
We tell ourselves we don’t deserve success, we downplay our achievements, or we create unnecessary drama to keep ourselves from stepping into our full potential.
Check, check, check.
I see it in my own life and business. The moment things start running smoothly, I suddenly feel the urge to tweak everything. Or I hesitate on an opportunity because what if I can’t handle it? The self-doubt sneaks in right when I’m about to level up.
Most of us spend too much time in what Hendricks calls the zone of excellence. We’re doing what we’re good at but not what we’re truly meant to do.
The challenge is pushing past those invisible limits and operating from what he calls the zone of genius, where our unique talents create the most impact.
The first step? Noticing when you’re holding yourself back. That’s what I’m doing for this first week of reading the book. I’m taking time and reflecting on each section and applying it to my life.
Want to reflect with me? Think about your own business or career:
Do you stop yourself from charging higher rates or taking on bigger projects, even when you know you can?
Have you ever turned down or delayed an opportunity because it felt too good to be true?
Are you playing it safe in your zone of excellence instead of stepping fully into your zone of genius?
For those reading “The Big Leap” with me (or who’ve already read it): What’s one upper limit problem you’ve recognized in your own life? Drop it in the comments—let’s talk about it! #bossresponsesbookclub #freelance #freelancer #bookstagram #bookclub
